One day, an old man was walking along a beach that was littered with thousands of starfish that had been washed ashore by the high tide. As he walked he came upon a young boy who was eagerly throwing the starfish back into the ocean, one by one.
Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing. Without looking up from his task, the boy simply replied, “I’m saving these starfish, Sir”.
The old man chuckled aloud, “Son, there are thousands of starfish and only one of you. What difference can you make?”
The boy picked up a starfish, gently tossed it into the water and turning to the man, said, “It made a difference to that one!”
When you take the stance of the little boy, you see that he is indeed making a difference, even if it is just one starfish at a time. I like to think of this in my life as making a difference one person at a time, one situation at a time, or even one day at a time. Each small moment represents an opportunity to give your best.
If you take the stance of the starfish, you see that each starfish matters to the little boy enough that he wants to save them individually. In our lives we can translate this image into God’s love for us. We also learn that we matter to God. No matter how small, tall, old, or young, we all matter to God enough for Him to love us individually.
How can you make a difference knowing that you matter to God? Go change the world.
